Terms and Conditions from 01/04/08

Note: For security purposes Backpacker, Britz and Maui only accept credit cards to provide a security deposit. The credit card holder must be present and be able to sign for the security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle. If a credit isn’t presented upon pick-up the client will be denied to rent the Campervan and full cancellation fees will be applied.

Rental rates include:
Fully maintained modern vehicles.
Unlimited kilometres.
Service and backup from all our branches throughout New Zealand.
Living equipment such as crockery, cutlery, sleeping bags.
Goods and Services tax is included in the daily gross rental rate of your vehicle hire.
Tourist Wallet including free road map and travel guide
FREE rental bike hire at any Top Ten Holiday Park
Tourist Supermarket Discount Card

Rates/Minimum Hire Periods:
* Rates are per day in NZ$ and include insurance, unlimited kilometres & GST (New Zealand Government Tax)
* The minimum hire period is five days

Drivers/Licences
All drivers must be at least 21 years old and hold a full and current New Zealand driver's licence, or an International Driving Licence, or a licence recognised by New Zealand from the country of origin (with certified English translation where applicable).

Depot/Pickup Points:
Depots: Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown, Christchurch

Wellington and Queenstown Depots
A location fee of NZ$200 applies to all campervans picking up or dropping off in Wellington.
A location fee of NZ$200 applies to all campervans picking up or dropping off in Queenstown.
If the pick-up and drop off occurs in the same city, only one location fee will apply.

One Way Drop Off Fee
A one way fee of NZ$220 is charged for rentals between the North and South Island where pick-up is between 1 Nov 2008 and 31 March 2009

Initial Gas bottle charge of NZ$15

Pre Purchase Gas Option: PGO is NZ$31 per vehicle (PGO included in Smart Pack)

Diesel Tax Recovery Fee
For every 100kms you pay NZ$4.85

SMARTRATES
Backpacker use ‘Smartrates' to determine the daily rental rate. Backpacker ‘Smartrates' are released every Friday. Amendments prior to pick-up will be re-calculated at the ‘Smartrate' applicable on the date of amendment. This applies to changing the vehicle type, reducing the number of rental days, changing pick-up dates or changing the pick-up or drop-off location. Where the number of rental days is being extended prior to pick-up, the extended days will be charged at the original smart rate, which applied at the time of the original booking.

INSURANCE
Standard Insurance
All vehicles are insured for damage to the vehicle or damage to the property of a third party. You are responsible for up to NZ$3500 (the excess) of the cost of damage to third party property or to the rental vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen & tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire or break in. The excess applies to each claim, not per rental. In the event of an accident an additional $3500 bond is required for a replacement vehicle. The NZ$3500 bond is payable by credit card (debited). Reduction options are covered below.

Excess Reduction 1 - By paying $19 per day you are responsible for up to NZ$1800 (the excess) of the cost of damage to third party property or to the rental vehicle. This includes a single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire or break in or vandalism with the exception of 'exclusions'. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage). The excess applies to each claim, not per rental. In the event of an accident an additional $1800 bond is required for a replacement vehicle. The NZ$1800 bond is payable by credit card (imprint taken). * Exclusions apply - see below

Excess Reduction 2 - By paying $28 per day you will not have to pay excess at all for any damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire or break in or vandalism with the exception of 'exclusions'. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage). A security deposit of NZ$220 is payable by credit card (imprint taken). Provided the vehicle is returned on time, undamaged and full of fuel the card will not be debited. * Exclusions apply - see below

No Worries Cover
This option made available at the depot at vehicle pick up time.
Hirers who purchase option 2 can also take out the "No Worries Cover" option, for a one off flat fee of NZ$50. This option covers you for overbody and underbody damage. No Worries Cover is included in the Backpacker Smart Pack.

Backpacker Smart Pack (optional 'All Inclusive' package)
The 'Backpacker Smart Pack' component of NZ$38 per day (maximum NZ$1900 per rental) is payable in addition to the standard daily rental rate.
Inclusions are: Excess Reduction Option 2 (Nil excess), No Worries Cover (PCO2 - extends the insurance cover to include accidental damage to the overhead and underbody sections of the vehicle), Diesel Tax Recovery costs, LPG Gas Refill (PGO - refill for gas bottle upon return of vehicle) - camping stools (1 per person travelling).

Tyre and Windscreen damage
Where Excess reduction 1 or 2 has been chosen, up to one windscreen and two tyres will be covered for accidental damage. Should these amounts be exceeded the cost to repair or replace the item will be the responsibility of the hirer.

*Exclusions
Excess Reduction Options are subject to certain exclusions including: water related damage, vehicle submersion, creek or river crossing, flooded areas, beach driving, personal belongings, retrieval/recovery costs if the vehicle has become bogged, willful misconduct, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, incorrect use of fuel, single vehicle roll over, cost to replace keys, and (unless No Worries Cover or Backpacker Smart Pack taken) overhead and underbody damage.

Bond
All hirers must pay a bond of NZ$3500 (the excess) in advance of the commencement of the hire, payable by credit card (debited). This bond is fully refundable if the vehicle has not been involved in an accident and that there are no third party claims against the hirer. The bond (excess) can be reduced by taking one of the options outlined under 'Insurance' above.

Cleaning fee
Backpacker reserves the right to retain an NZ$220 cleaing fee if the vehicle is not returned with the interior in a clean condition.

It is recommended that hirers take out their own travel insurance to cover personal injury, medical expenses and personal property.

Credit cards
A non-refundable credit card surcharge of 1.75% will apply to all credit card transactions. Credit card surcharges also apply to the security bonds for campervans. In this instance, the surcharge is refunded when the bond is refunded; if the bond is retained, the surcharge is retained.

Child / booster seats
Backpacker vehicles do not have anchorage points for child restraints. Child / booster seats are secured using a standard lap belt.

General Conditions
The Company reserve the right to make deductions over and above the bond for any of, or multiples of the following:

Missing or damaged equipment. The vehicle is not returned in a clean condition.

The Company is unable to make refunds for vehicle returns before the due date, or unused rental days.

Hired vehicle operated outside the terms on the rental agreement have no insurance cover and the hirer is liable for the entire cost of damage.

Booking Deposit
A deposit of 15% of the total hire cost is payable to secure a booking. This is calculated on 15% of the daily hire tarrif times the number of days of the hire. All remaining hire cost's payable at Depot.
